Inquiry Method is a technique for interacting with people that allows for connection, intimacy, and transformation. In Inquiry Method, one person directs their complete attention toward another human being by relaxing their habitual egoic perspective and dropping in to a state of curiosity, wonder, and learning about how that unique person being feels, experiences, and operates in life. We call this coaching or inquiry. The person who does this I call an inquirist or coach.

On the receiving side, it is exactly the same thing. In that same egoless way, we can put attention on ourselves through and in connection with the inquirist, dropping out of the ego that thinks it knows everything about itself into a sense of wonder, curiosity, and learning about myself. I call this capacity coachability. In this state, you could call yourself the client or the inquiree.

From the outside, the inquirist looks like they’re holding the position of coach or teacher. But on the inside, the person putting their attention out is holding incredible vulnerability in that they don’t know—meaning, they don’t have all the answers. They only have their curiosity to work with. They want to understand completely, and they’re inquiring deeply and authentically about whatever is arising in that moment.
